When Duty Calls Project on January 15-16, 2008:
On January 15th and 16th, the YLD Military Issues Committee is running a project in conjunction with Womble Carlyle titled "When Duty Calls" to provide pro bono assistance to disabled Veterans who wish to file initial disability claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs. When Duty Calls includes a half-day training seminar followed by a full-day clinic that will be held in Winston-Salem. Womble Carlyle will also broadcast the January 15th When Duty Calls training seminar from Winston-Salem via videoconference to its offices in Raleigh, RTP, Greensboro, and Charlotte.
The January 15th seminar will run from 9 am until 2 pm (with a full hour break from 12 until 1 pm, the substance abuse component will run from 1 until 2 pm). In addition, a request for NC CLE accreditation is pending (we should be approved for three hours general credit, one hour substance abuse credit). We have limited space but need dedicated lawyers from around the state who are willing to participate in the initial training session the first day and devote their time (three hours or so) to the clinic the following day (in Winston-Salem).
The clinic will be a very rewarding experience. If you are interested in volunteering for When Duty Calls, please email Tripp Greason at tgreason@wcsr.com, or Ellis Boyle at eboyle@wcsr.com.
Start Your Own Law Firm CLE in July 2008:
The YLD CLE and New Projects Committee is hard at work creating a new CLE for July 2008. Working hand in hand with the NCBA Solo and Small Firm Committee, the YLD is putting together a timely and important CLE about law firm management. The CLE will be held in Wilmington, NC in late July 2008 and is designed to be fun and family friendly.
The topics of the CLE include: Human Resource Issues for Law Firms, How to Set Up and Start Your Own Firm, Choice of Business Entity, Law Firm Technology, Business Plans, File Storage Issues, Client Development and Marketing, Ethics, Law Firm Accounting, Substance Abuse/Mental Health issues, and Small Firm Support/Outsourcing. The CLE is designed to help interested lawyers to open a new practice and show those attorneys working in large law firms the dynamics of the law practice. Speakers should range from solo practitioners to managing members of large NC law firms.
The CLE and New Projects Committee is also working to perform similar mini-classes at each of NC's law schools in the first six months of 2008.

Legal Website:
Avvo
http://www.avvo.com/
This controversial company and its beta website have been in the news frequently this past year. Among other services, the company's website rates attorneys and provides referrals for prospective clients. From the website: "The Avvo Rating: Based on information we have collected about a lawyer, the Avvo Rating is our effort to evaluate a lawyer's background, based on the information we know about the lawyer, using a mathematical model that considers the information shown in a lawyer's profile - information that, in our opinion, is relevant to assessing a lawyer's qualifications." North Carolina attorneys are not covered in the beta site yet, but this is something to keep an eye on. There is a section of the website where any attorney may submit and manage his or her own profile.
