High School Guidebook Project

The High School Guidebook is an informational pamphlet designed to educate high school students about their civic rights and responsibilities as citizens.

On April 12, 2005, the Citizenship Education Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division is visiting East Burke High School in Icard, North Carolina.  During this visit, the attorneys will meet with classes throughout the day in order to distribute and discuss information in the High School Guidebook.

The High School Guidebook, titled “Life & Laws 101,” is an informational pamphlet designed to educate high school students about their civic rights and responsibilities as citizens of North Carolina and the United States of America, during this transitional time in their lives.  The Guidebook is a practical resource tool for students as they prepare to graduate from high school, and are thrust into “adulthood” where they will face numerous life decisions which are destined to be both challenging and utterly confusing.

The High School Guidebook specifically addresses topics such as voting, military service, jury duty, credit, banking, employment, consumer protection, as well as numerous other rights and responsibilities associated with adulthood and good citizenship.  The members of the Citizenship Education Committee researched and drafted the articles included in the Guidebook with the ultimate goal of providing basic legal and practical information that these young adults can use to make informed decisions which will inevitably mold them into better citizens.  In addition, the High School Guidebook includes a resources section, which identifies a plethora of resource groups in the governmental and private sector along with their contact information, to assist these young adults with specific issues or questions beyond that addressed by the Guidebook.

If you would like volunteer during the school visit scheduled for April 12, 2005 or would like more information regarding this project, please contact one of the following:  Tina Hlabse (919.716.6824 or thlabse@ncdoj.com), Kendra Dockery (919.841.4040 or kdockery@ncsba.org), or Patti Ramseur (336.378.5304 or patti.ramseur@smithmoorelaw.com.
